One of the most famous racecourses in the world, Ascot is steeped in history and boasts a rich heritage. The founding of Ascot dates back to 1711 when Queen Anne went for a ride Near Windsor Castle and came upon a wide, open area of land. On this land she commented “this looks ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch” This spot was where the Queen saw potential for a racecourse, Ascot Racecourse. Later that year, the first race meet was held named appropriately ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’. The event offered 100 Guineas to the winner and was open to any mare or gelding over the age of 6. The origin of the Royal Meeting stemmed from the first four-day meeting that took place.
The race meet is known today as the Gold Cup which features on the third day of Ascot, also known as our favourite race day, ‘Ladies Day’. With a mere 300,000 attending the event, all eyes are on not only the racing but the fashion too. Ascot is one of the highlights of the British summer social season. Well-heeled ladies take to the racing ground dressed in bold colours and unique prints, ranging from the elegant to the creative. From simple ladylike attire to wild and whimsical there really is something for everyone at this prestigious event.
‘Ladies Day’ boasts fashion triumphs and fashion faux pas, with the dress code in this area strictly enforced down to the size of your hat required by both gentlemen and ladies. The ostentatious head pieces range from small, feathery fascinators to oversized statement millinery creations. The racing event has a strict dress code, and last year the organisers amended their sartorial rules to include jumpsuits.
